What's in a name? | Part One

What's in a name? | Part One

Proverb Clothing was our way of boldly taking two important assignments and intricately weaving them together for the expansion of God’s Kingdom. The calling to be the “Light in the Dark” and the Great Commission of “Spreading the Good News”. Yet, we wanted to do so in a way that was approachable and could comfortably be shared with others. From the outside looking in, it seems to be a simple black shirt with white lettering. We hope over the next few blog posts that we convey the depth and divine inspiration that has been laid out on our hearts for creating Proverb Clothing.

So who turned on the lights and why does that matter?

3 “Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.” Genesis 1:3-4 NLT

On the first day of creation, God flipped on the light switch and established a clear division between light & dark. His emphasis on the importance of light is carried throughout the Bible.

In Matthew 5:14-16 ESV it states 14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

You see, we were given stewardship by Christ to illuminate truth, be compassionate, and seek justice amidst the shadows of uncertainty and ignorance. This was a call to action to stand as beacons of hope and guidance despite being surrounded by darkness. You’ll notice that all of our clothing can only be found with black background with white lettering. This is to symbolize when God saw the darkness in us and shone His light upon us. His word is good, therefore is pure, hence the white lettering that draws your attention.

We can’t stop there because some of us aren’t plugged into the power of God’s light yet. What most don’t realize is how God’s word and the Bible were the OG influencers of literally everything! From laws, literature, art and ethics, the Bible is a foundational text that has spanned across centuries and continents. Its influence is woven into the fabric of society and is evident in our systems, traditions, establishments and collective consciousness. This is where the light bulb clicked on for us when we first began our walk with Christ.

It isn’t hard to fathom that most of us want some hard evidence that God exists. Who is this entity that people worship & transform their lives for? The responses you may hear more often than not is to “get into the word”, “the Bible is the living word”, or the “Bible will hold the answer you are looking for.” That's because more mature Christians know that prayer combined with God’s Word is the recipe for a surge of His light into your life, and it will release the veil that has been held over your eyes. We experienced a hunger for more than just well-written Sunday sermons and started taking to heart the advice of opening His Word for ourselves. We were more astonished at how many common and every day sayings actually came from the Bible.

With eyes wide open, we started relating the phrases in the Bible to points in history and quickly saw the dots connect with culture. It became more apparent how intricately the stories in the Bible correlate on a level that can only be explained by divine inspiration.

We've enjoyed finding these well known expressions in the Bible and studying the Biblical & world culture implications of the texts. It became God’s way of plainly speaking to our hearts. We felt inspired to take the “common sense” approach that God intentionally placed right in front of all of us and use it as a way to spread the Gospel and illuminate the dots for those like us that can’t easily see it. After all, words are power and just as God spoke light into existence, bold Proverbs can spark conversation and plant the seed of truth in the dark!
